What data is protected under the CCPA?

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) protects a wide range of personal data belonging to California residents. It covers both current and former California residents, regardless of where the personal data is collected or stored. Generally, personal data protected under the CCPA includes a person’s name, address, email address, Social Security Number, driver’s license number, bank account details, medical information, and internet browser history. Additionally, the CCPA protects biometric data such as scans of fingerprints and voice recordings, as well as geolocation information, and inferences drawn from a person’s personal data that reveal their shopping preferences or behavior. Businesses are also not allowed to sell any personal information belonging to minors, regardless of the age of the minor. Finally, the CCPA provides protection for data stored or collected by business’s third-party vendors, who must observe certain limitations as set forth by the CCPA. In other words, any information a business collects must be protected by the privacy law outlined by the CCPA.
