How does the CCPA affect businesses?
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which went into effect in January 2020, affects businesses in Washington and throughout the US. The CCPA gives consumers increased control over how their personal information is collected and used. Businesses are now required to give consumers the right to opt-out of the sale of their personal data. Additionally, businesses must provide detailed information about the categories of personal data they collect, how and why they collect it, and how long it is stored. Businesses must also provide a “Do Not Sell My Personal Information” link on their websites and allow consumers a way to request deletion of their personal information. The CCPA also requires businesses to implement data security safeguards, which can include encrypting personal data, and to investigate and report unauthorized data access. Businesses that fail to comply with the CCPA can be fined up to $7,500 per violation. To stay compliant and avoid penalties, businesses must have policies, procedures, and systems in place to ensure they are complying with the requirements of the CCPA. Overall, the CCPA puts more responsibility on businesses to protect consumer rights and their personal data. Businesses must now be more transparent and accountable, ensuring that they are properly collecting, storing, and disposing of customer data.
