What is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)?

In New Hampshire, HIPAA-covered entities such as doctors, hospitals, health insurers, and other health care providers must follow the requirements of the law. This includes ensuring the privacy and security of private health information held by them. In addition, HIPAA also requires these organizations to inform individuals about their privacy practices. HIPAA also requires that health information collected by these covered entities may not be used or disclosed for any purpose other than for which it was collected. Furthermore, the individual must provide written authorization for the release of any of his or her information. Additionally, HIPAA-covered entities must ensure that the information is kept securely and can only be used for the purpose for which it was intended.
