What data is protected under PIPEDA?
Washington follows the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), a nation-wide Canadian privacy law that protects the personal data of individuals. This data includes name, address, age, gender, race, and ethnic origin, as well as personal opinions, interests, lifestyle information, medical information, employee information and credit records. To protect this data, PIPEDA requires organizations to have security policies in place, such as encryption, firewalls and user authentication. To ensure that organizations are following the requirements of PIPEDA, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada conducts periodic audits. These are to ensure that organizations are storing personal data safely and securely, and that individuals are aware of their rights when it comes to their personal information.
