How are data privacy rights enforced?
Data privacy rights are enforced by federal and state laws that protect individuals’ information from misuse or unauthorized data access. In North Carolina, the General Statute Sections 66-154 and 66-157 protect information collected by organizations for commercial purposes, as well as personal data gathered by providers of online services. These laws enforce data privacy rights by requiring that organizations get permission from customers before collecting, using, and sharing their data. For example, the North Carolina Attorney General has the power to issue civil penalties for violations of data privacy laws, and consumers can bring private suits against organizations that fail to protect their data. Data privacy is an important right in North Carolina, and the state’s laws are in place to ensure that organizations are responsible with customers’ data. If data privacy rights are not enforced by organizations, then individuals may be vulnerable to identity theft, financial loss, or other forms of abuse.
