What is an appraisal district?
An appraisal district is an administrative body that is responsible for assessing and collecting property tax in New Mexico. It is responsible for the fair and impartial assessment of all taxable property in the district. The primary role of an appraisal district is to maintain accurate records of all property values and to establish a fair market value for every property in the district. This value is then used to calculate the amount of tax that must be paid by the property owner. Appraisal districts are also responsible for enforcing payment of property taxes, as well as ensuring that the assessment of property values is fair and equitable. In some areas, the appraisal district is also responsible for designing and creating the maps that are used to guide the taxing authorities in the assessment of property. The Property Tax Division of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department provides oversight of all appraisal districts in the state.
