What is a property tax rebate?
A property tax rebate is a reduction in the amount of property tax a tax payer owes. This can be obtained either through tax legislation passed by Congress, or through local governments. In California, property tax rebates can be granted to certain homeowners in order to help reduce the burden of high property taxes. Property tax rebates are generally based on factors such as income, the amount of taxes paid, the value of the property, and the person’s ability to pay. For instance, a homeowner who owns a home appraised at a value of $200,000, but whose annual income is low, may be given a rebate in order to reduce the amount of taxes due. In California, property tax rebates vary from county to county. Generally, those with low incomes and high taxes are the most likely to receive the largest rebates. For example, in Los Angeles County, homeowners earning less than $20,000 per year may receive a property tax rebate of up to $250. Finally, to qualify for a property tax rebate, homeowners must generally provide proof of income, such as W-2 forms and/or tax returns, along with additional documents proving ownership of the property. Once approved, the rebate amount will be applied to the annual property tax invoice, reducing the amount owed.
