Property tax assessment appeal law is a set of rules and regulations that allow property owners in California to challenge the assessed value of their property through a formal appeal process. This process allows them to contest the amount of taxes they are being asked to pay based on the assessed value that the taxing authority has placed on their property. The appeal process is designed to ensure that property owners are not taxed more than what their property is actually worth. When filing for an appeal, property owners must provide detailed information about the property as well as additional evidence to support their claim. The assessment appeal process then goes through a series of steps which begins with the property owner filing a complaint with the assessing authority and ends with a final decision from the Board of Equalization. In order to contest the rate of taxation, property owners must instead file a Proposition 13 complaint.
