What is an exemption from property taxes?
An exemption from property taxes is a tax break that may be applied to certain properties in the state of Florida. This exemption reduces or entirely eliminates the amount of money owed to the county for the property taxes of the property in question. The Florida Constitution and statutes provide a number of exemptions from property taxes. These exemptions generally include exemptions for homesteads, veterans, disabled individuals, and nonprofit organizations. Homestead exemptions apply to a person’s primary residence if they are a Florida resident and meet certain qualifications, such as owning the residence for the last two years. This exemption generally does not include any other real property, such as vacation homes or rental homes. Veterans or disabled individuals may be eligible for exemptions based on their service to the nation or disabilities. Qualified applicants may receive a $5,000 exemption for disabilities or a $5,000 exemption for veterans, or a total of $10,000 for both exemptions combined. Non-profit organizations may be eligible for property tax exemptions as well. Generally, these organizations are exempt from taxes on properties used exclusively for charitable, religious, or educational purposes. The Florida Department of Revenue is responsible for determining eligibility, issuing exemption certificates, and notifying the county Property Appraiser when exemptions have been granted. Applicants must apply to the Property Appraiser in their county for an exemption certificate.
