The assessment appeal process typically starts with an informal review with the county tax assessor or a representative. After the informal review, if a resolution is not reached then property owners may file a formal appeal with the Value Adjustment Board (VAB). The VAB is a special board made up of members representing the county commission, school board, and county appraiser. The board may choose to adjust the taxes to reflect the actual value of the property or may leave them as is. Once a decision is reached, the property owner has the option to accept the assessment or to appeal the decision to the circuit court.
