How do I apply for property tax relief?
In South Dakota, property tax relief is provided through the state’s Tax Equalization and Review Commission (TERC). To apply, you must first contact your local county treasurer. They will be able to provide you with the necessary forms, which must be filled out completely and returned to the treasurer. If you meet all of the criteria for receiving relief, your county treasurer will submit the paperwork to TERC. Once your application is received, TERC will review it and will contact you if they require further information. Once they have all of the paperwork and have reviewed it, they will decide whether or not to approve your application. If approved, you will receive a reduction in your property tax bill for the next fiscal year. In order to qualify you for property tax relief, you must provide evidence of a significant financial hardship. This could include job loss, illness, or other major events that would make it difficult to pay property taxes. There are also limits on the amount of relief that can be granted, and it can be reduced or eliminated if your financial circumstances change. TERC may also require additional documentation, such as a budget and bank statements. If your application is accepted, TERC will contact you to discuss the amount of relief that is approved. It’s important to remember that the decision to grant relief is subject to change if your financial situation changes at any time.
