What is an international application?

An international application is a type of patent application, which is recognized by the Patent Cooperation Treaty and filed with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). This type of patent application allows inventors in Nevada to have protection for their invention in more than one country. When an inventor files an international application, it is sent to the International Bureau of WIPO, where it is sent to the designated countries in which protection is sought. Each country then reviews the application to determine whether the invention is suitable for patent protection. If the invention is accepted, then a patent can be obtained in that country. In addition to ensuring protection for inventions in multiple countries, an international application allows inventors in Nevada to delay filing applications in individual countries. This is known as the “priority period”, and it begins when the international application is filed, and lasts for up to 12 months. During this period, inventors can use the priority period to refine and perfect their invention, before filing individual applications in each country. The benefit of this type of patent application is that it is less expensive and time-consuming than filing separate applications in multiple countries. However, in order to obtain patent protection in multiple countries, filing an international application is still necessary.
