What is an international application?
An international application is a patent application that is made in more than one country. It is an agreement between the countries which makes it easier to get patents and trademarks in multiple countries. It is typically used by businesses that operate in multiple countries, as it saves them time and money. An international application is filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This organization is responsible for deciding which individual countries will process the application. Once the countries are selected, the applicant must provide all the necessary paperwork and information to each of those countries in order for the patent application to be accepted. In North Dakota, international applications are handled by the Department of Commerce. The Department of Commerce will review the application and the supporting documents before submitting them to the designated countries. After all documents are received, the international application is forwarded to the international bureau of each designated country and the applicant will receive a filing date for the application in each country. After the filing date is received, the applicant will be informed of the status of each application and whether the patent has been awarded.
