What is an international application?

An international application is a type of patent application used to apply for patents in multiple countries or jurisdictions. International applications are used when an inventor wishes to protect the same invention in multiple countries. These international applications are filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The international application process is a two-step process. First, a single international application is filed with the WIPO. This application must meet minimum requirements in order to be accepted. These requirements include proper filing fees, detailed drawings, and a description of the invention. Once the application is accepted, the WIPO then forwards it to the patent offices of the countries that the application targets. In South Carolina, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is the responsible agency for handling international applications. The USPTO reviews the application and determines whether or not the invention qualifies for patent protection. If the application is approved, then the USPTO will forward it to the designated patent offices in the countries where the inventor is requesting protection. International applications can be a complicated and expensive process, but they can be a useful tool for inventors who are seeking to protect their inventions in multiple countries. The WIPO has numerous resources available to help inventors with their international applications, so it is important to research and understand the process before submitting an international application.
