What should I know about antitrust laws?
Antitrust laws exist to protect consumers from unfair business practices that undermine free and fair competition. In Arizona, these laws are enforced by the Arizona Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice. These laws apply to any business, regardless of size, that engages in interstate commerce. Antitrust laws are designed to prevent companies from forming monopolies or cartels, which restrict trade and are detrimental to consumers. These laws also seek to eliminate price-fixing, whereby certain companies agree to set the same prices for goods or services. By doing so, these companies are able to limit competition and keep prices artificially high. For small businesses, understanding antitrust laws is important to ensure that they are engaging in fair, legal business practices. Companies should also review their policies to make sure they are not violating any of these rules. It is also important for individuals to know their rights under these laws. If someone believes that a business is engaging in anticompetitive behavior, they can report the issue to the Arizona Attorney General or the Department of Justice. Consumers also have the right to bring a civil lawsuit against a business for violation of antitrust laws.
