What should I know about labor unions and collective bargaining?
Labor unions and collective bargaining in Massachusetts are agreements between employers and employees that allow workers to bargain collectively or as a group in order to improve their working conditions. The typical objectives of labor unions and collective bargaining are wages, benefits, and job security. The National Labor Relations Board is the federal agency responsible for enforcing labor laws. In Massachusetts, the Division of Labor Relations is the state agency responsible for enforcing labor laws. It also administers collective bargaining agreements between employers and unions. Employees who want to form a union in Massachusetts must file a petition with the NLRB. After the petition is approved, the union must hold an election and receive a majority vote from the employees in order to be recognized as the union representing the employees. If a majority of the employees vote to be represented by a union, the employer and union must enter into collective bargaining. During collective bargaining, both the employer and union representatives should meet to discuss wages, hours, health benefits, safety standards, and other employment issues. Once an agreement is reached, the employer must comply with the agreement. It is important for employees to understand their rights under labor laws and collective bargaining agreements. If the employer and union do not reach an agreement during collective bargaining, either party can ask the NLRB to step in and mediate the dispute.
