What is small claims court?

Small Claims Court is a type of court in Florida designed to help people settle small disputes without the need for expensive or complicated legal proceedings. The court hears claims involving minor matters such as money owed, property damage, and other civil disputes, usually involving amounts less than $5,000. Small Claims Court is designed to be accessible and less formal than other court proceedings. It is open to the public, and anyone can file a claim and represent themselves, or hire a lawyer if they choose. The process is generally faster and less expensive than a normal court case. Typically, the plaintiff files the claim, and the defendant has an opportunity to respond. The parties may then appear in court and present their case. The judge will make a decision and a written judgement is issued. The judgement may be enforced by both parties abiding by the court’s decision, or the plaintiff may have to pursue the matter further in another court, such as a district court.
