What types of disputes are eligible for small claims court?
Small claims court, also known as magistrate or justice court, is a courthouse where individuals can present an argument and receive a legal judgment for disputes that involve small amounts of money. In South Dakota, small claims court handles disputes for amounts up to $12,000. Generally, disputes eligible for small claims court include civil disputes, such as those involving property damage, contract problems, rent disputes, or other financial matters.
