Is there a limit on the number of claims I can file in small claims court?
In Rhode Island, there is no limit to the number of claims you can file in small claims court. However, anyone filing multiple claims must do so separately and in different court locations. Filing multiple claims at one time can overwhelm the court system and create delays in the process. Filing claims that are related to one another in the same court is also discouraged. These actions can lead to confusion and delays. It may even be viewed as the attempt to obtain a ruling in which the outcome of multiple claims depends on each other. When filing a claim or multiple claims, you must provide proof of your factual allegations. You must also be willing to participate in a trial and/or a mediation process. If you are filing a claim against a person or business, you must ensure that they are legally eligible to be sued in Rhode Island. It is important to do your research and understand the small claims process before filing any claim or multiple claims. An attorney may also be able to provide advice and guidance on the process and the potential legal outcomes.
