What happens if I disagree with the decision in a small claims court case?

If you disagree with the decision made by a small claims court in Washington, you may file a Notice of Appeal to appeal the decision. The Notice of Appeal must be completed within 30 days of the decision being made and must be filed with the court where you filed the original case. When filing the Notice of Appeal, you must also pay a fee and provide a copy of the judgment to the appellate court. After the Notice of Appeal is filed, you and the other party in the case will appear before a judge where you will both be allowed to present evidence and arguments. After hearing both sides, the judge will issue a written decision which may agree with the lower court’s ruling, or may modify it. If you are still not satisfied with the court’s decision, you may appeal the ruling to Washington’s appellate court. It is important to note that if you decide to appeal the ruling of the small claims court, you must do so within the timeframe set by the court. Failing to do so may result in your appeal being dismissed. Additionally, appeals can be costly, so you may want to weigh the costs of taking your case to the higher court against the potential benefit of any modifications to the lower court’s decision.
