How long do universities have to respond to student defense complaints?
In Washington, universities typically have 15 calendar days to respond to student defense complaints, although this timeline can vary depending on the severity and complexity of the complaint. Complaints can range from discrimination or harassment to academic integrity violations. When a student files a complaint, the university will first review it to determine if it meets the criteria to be considered a formal complaint. If so, the university will launch an investigation into the complaint. The length of the investigation will depend upon the complexity of the case and whether the university must rely on external evidence. Also, the university may take into account whether the complaint requires special accommodations or policies for a fair resolution. Once the investigation is complete, the university will provide a response to the student. This response must follow guidelines set out by the Washington Student Defense Law. These guidelines include: providing the student with a written statement that outlines the investigation findings and any disciplinary action taken as a result of the complaint, including what remedies are available to the student, and the right for the student to appeal the determination if they feel it was not fair or just. In addition, the university must provide clear procedures for filing a student defense complaint, provide timely notices of any deadlines related to filing the complaint, and arrange for a mediation session when appropriate to try to reach a resolution.
