How much can I borrow in student loans?

In Wisconsin, the maximum amount a student can borrow in student loans is limited by their expected family contribution, cost of attendance, and other factors. Generally, the total amount of federal student loan borrowing for undergraduate students is limited to $57,500 across all years. This includes $31,000 in subsidized and unsubsidized loans combined, with no more than $23,000 of that amount in subsidized loans. Graduate students can borrow up to $138,500 ($65,500 in subsidized loans). The amount of private loans available is determined by individual lenders and their lending criteria. Generally, the amount of private loan funding a student can highly depend on their credit history and other considerations. In addition to federal and private loans, students may be eligible to borrow PLUS loans from the Federal Government. These loans are taken out by parents and can cover up to the full cost of attendance, minus any other financial aid received. It is important for students and their families to research loan limits and consider their individual situations before borrowing. Students should also be aware of the terms and conditions of their loans, as well as the options available for repayment.
