What types of compensation are available from a sports injury settlement?

In North Carolina, a person that suffers an injury while participating in a sport may be compensated through a settlement if their injury was caused by another person’s negligence or intentional act. Generally, a settlement may cover economic damages such as medical expenses, the cost of physical therapy, lost wages, and loss of future income. These damages must be quantified and the amount of compensation must be agreed upon by both parties. Depending on the circumstances, a person may also be entitled to non-economic damages. These damages are typically awarded to individuals who suffer physical pain and emotional distress due to a sports injury. In some cases, individuals may also be compensated for punitive damages. Punitive damages are meant to punish the responsible party and deter them from committing the same offense again in the future. In order to be successful in a sports injury claim, an individual must prove that the other party acted negligently or with intent. If successful, the injured party may receive a variety of compensations including medical costs, lost wages, and loss of future income, as well as non-economic damages and punitive damages, depending on the circumstances.
