What medical conditions qualify for Social Security Disability?
In New Hampshire, the Social Security Administration (SSA) explains that there are a variety of medical conditions that qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. These include physical or mental conditions that prevent a person from engaging in substantial gainful activity or work. Examples of physical conditions include amputations, blindness, heart conditions, arthritis, and back or spinal injuries. Mental conditions such as anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia can also qualify. Additionally, there are certain conditions that the SSA considers “compassionate allowances” that automatically qualify for SSD benefits, such as certain forms of cancer, LvSIgA Nephropathy, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), and certain rare genetic disorders. In order to qualify, individuals must meet certain SSA criteria. Generally, applicants must demonstrate that they have a medically determinable impairment that prevents them from engaging in substantial gainful activity. Applicants must also show that their condition is expected to last at least 12 months or is terminal. Additionally, applicants must provide evidence of a medical history, laboratory findings, and diagnostic tests that support their disability claim. Given the complexity of SSD criteria and application process, it is wise to consult with an experienced disability attorney who understands New Hampshire SSD Law and can help navigate the requirements.
