What is the status of my Social Security Disability claim?
In Tennessee, the status of your Social Security Disability (SSD) claim depends on a few factors. Generally, you will receive an initial decision letter in the mail about four to six weeks after the Social Security Administration (SSA) receives your application. The letter will state whether or not you have been approved for SSD benefits, and if not, why not. If your application is denied, you may appeal the decision. You will need to file a written appeal within 60 days of receiving the initial denial letter. When you file the appeal, the SSA will review your case again to determine if the denial was appropriate. If the appeal is granted, you will receive payments retroactive to the date of your appeal. If your application is approved, you will receive a notice confirming this in the mail. This notice will include information about how much you can expect to receive in monthly benefits. Your first payment will generally arrive within two to three months of the date of your approved application. After that, you will receive your monthly payment as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements for SSD. You can keep track of the status of your application and payments by logging in to your My Social Security account. There, you can also update your contact information or change your payment method.
