How long does it take for payments to start after being approved for Social Security Disability?

After being approved for Social Security Disability in Pennsylvania, payments can start anywhere from one to three months after the approval date. This timeline can vary depending on the individual case, and claimants can check their application status online. As part of the approval process, claimants are required to complete and return a form to the Social Security Administration that outlines the type of payment they would like to receive. Once the SSA receives this information, they will send the payment to the individual’s bank account or payment card typically within one to two weeks. If the applicant is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, they will get these payments on the first of the month. For disability retirement, the payment process can also take a few months due to the approval process. After the SSA approves the application, the applicant has to wait for the Office of Personnel Management to approve the application before receiving the payments. This can take one to three months. It is important to note that the SSA may take longer to process applications in cases where the applicant is receiving retroactive payments. These are payments that are owed to the claimant for a period that has already ended. In such cases, the processing time can be up to 113 days.
