What happens to Social Security Disability benefits when someone dies?
When someone who receives Social Security Disability benefits in Kansas passes away, there are a few things that can happen to those benefits. The Social Security Administration must be notified of the death, and this will stop the payments to the deceased’s account. Some of the benefits may be payable to the surviving spouse or a minor child of the deceased individual. The surviving spouse is usually eligible to receive the entire amount that the deceased was receiving in Social Security Disability payments. If there is a minor child who is also receiving benefits, the amount of benefits will be split between the surviving spouse and the minor child. In some cases, a dependent parent and/or a disabled child may be eligible to continue receiving payments if they were listed as a beneficiary on the deceased’s account. A lump sum death payment of up to $255 may be available to the surviving spouse or to the deceased’s estate. In addition, the surviving spouse may be eligible for a funeral allowance of up to $800. It is important to note that the Social Security Administration must be notified of the death of the disability recipient in order for any survivor benefits to be paid. If the survivor benefits are not claimed within two years after the death, the eligibility for the payments will be forfeited. It is important to contact the Social Security Administration as soon as possible in order to ensure that all benefits are properly distributed.
