What happens if I am approved for Social Security Disability but find a job?

If you are approved for Social Security Disability (SSD) in Tennessee and find a job, you may be able to keep your benefits. There are two major rules set by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that allow individuals to work while still receiving SSD benefits. The first rule is called the trial work period (TWP). This rule allows individuals to work up to nine months, called trial work months, within a five-year period and still receive benefits. During the trial work period, any month in which your earnings exceed a certain limit will count as a trial work month, even if you don’t work every month. The SSA will review your income to determine if you qualify for a TWP. The second rule is called the extended period of eligibility (EPE). The EPE allows you to receive benefits for up to 36 months after you end your trial work period. During this period, your earnings must be below the SGA (substantial gainful activity) limit set by the SSA. The SGA limit is adjusted each year. As long as you remain within these rules, you may be able to keep your SSD benefits while having a job. This can be beneficial if you need the extra income or if you want to be able to keep earning retirement credits and lender access when you leave SSD.
