What is a qualifying disability for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides financial assistance to individuals who are aged, blind, or have a qualifying disability. In order to qualify for SSI in New Hampshire, an individual must meet certain criteria. The disability must be medically determinable and the impairment must significantly limit the individual’s ability to do basic activities such as walking, speaking, seeing, hearing, and learning. The disability must also prevent the individual from engaging in any substantial gainful activity. Many types of conditions can qualify as a disability, such as physical impairments, mental health conditions, and developmental disabilities. In addition, the disability must be expected to last at least twelve consecutive months or result in death. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will consider any relevant medical evidence in order to make a determination regarding the individual’s disability status. To be eligible for SSI, an individual must also meet the income and resource criteria set by the SSA. An individual’s income must be below the threshold established by the SSA. There are certain resources that are not counted in determining eligibility, such as a house, certain household items, and life insurance policies. If an individual is found to be disabled, and meets the income and resource requirements, he or she may qualify for SSI benefits. Those benefits may include monthly payments, help with medical expenses, and access to other services.
