What kinds of income are counted against Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
In Florida, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides financial benefits for persons with disabilities. The amount of SSI received is determined by a person’s financial resources and the amount of any other income received. Several different kinds of income can count against an individual’s SSI benefits, including wages, Social Security benefits, pensions, annuities, interest, dividends, and certain other types of income. Wages are the most common form of income that can be counted against an individual’s SSI benefits. Any wages earned through employment or self-employment can have an effect on an individual’s SSI eligibility and on the amount of SSI they receive. Social Security benefits, including Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), are also counted against SSI. Any pensions, annuities, or other similar payments from organizations are also counted against an individual’s SSI benefits. Interest and dividends earned on investments are also counted against an individual’s SSI benefits. Some other forms of income that are counted against SSI include veterans’ benefits, unemployment compensation, and some types of public assistance benefits. In addition, any income an individual receives from gifts, inheritances, or legal settlements can also have an effect on their SSI benefits. It is important to note that any income received must be within certain limits in order to qualify for SSI benefits.
