What kinds of income are counted against Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

In Tennessee, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may be counted against certain types of income that an applicant receives. Generally, the income that is counted against SSI includes earned income, such as wages from a job, as well as unearned income, such as Social Security benefits, veterans benefits, workers’ compensation and other types of retirement income. In addition to the above-mentioned types of income, SSI may also be counted against certain resources, such as cash in a savings or checking account, investments, real estate, and vehicles. Generally, the resources that are counted against SSI do not exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple. If the resources exceed these limits, then the amount over the limit is then counted against SSI payments. In some cases, certain types of income or resources may be excluded from being counted against SSI. These types of income or resources may include assets from an education or training program, special needs trusts, and certain types of inheritances and gifts. It is important to understand all of the income and resources that are counted against SSI when applying for benefits in Tennessee. An experienced lawyer can help individuals understand what kinds of income and resources are counted against SSI in order to ensure that they are not denied the benefits they are entitled to.
