Can I collect disability benefits and Social Security Retirement at the same time?

Yes, it is possible to collect both Social Security Disability and Social Security Retirement at the same time in the state of Virginia. However, certain rules apply. According to the Social Security Administration, if you are receiving benefits from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and have reached the full retirement age, you will automatically be converted to Social Security Retirement benefits. Additionally, if you begin receiving SSDI before your full retirement age, you may be able to work and earn income up to the Social Security earnings limit while still receiving disability benefits. This is referred to as "concurrent benefits." If you have reached your full retirement age and are collecting Social Security Retirement benefits, it is possible to receive disability benefits as well if your illness or disability is severe enough to qualify. You must, however, meet the Social Security definition of disability to qualify for concurrent benefits. To be eligible, your disability must be so severe that it has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or is expected to result in death. Additionally, you must have worked long enough and recently enough to earn enough Social Security credits. It is important to understand that if you are collecting both Social Security Retirement and SSDI benefits, you will receive only the higher amount.
