What are “impairment-related work expenses”?
Impairment-related work expenses (IRWE) are expenses that an individual with a disability incurs as a result of their impairment. These expenses can be related to medical equipment and services, transportation, or other items that are necessary for a person to be able to work. In Kansas, IRWE can include expenses such as purchasing and maintaining medical equipment, therapy sessions, medical supplies, and medical treatments that are necessary for the individual to be able to work. Transportation expenses can include costs related to traveling to and from work and to and from medical appointments. Other work-related expenses that may be allowed in Kansas include child care, attendant care, and other specialized services. All of these expenses must be related to the individual’s impairment, and must be necessary for the individual to be able to keep a job or take a job if available. The Social Security Administration will consider any reasonable disability-related expenses when determining a person’s eligibility for Social Security Disability benefits. If it is determined that these expenses are necessary, then it could result in the individual receiving an increased benefit amount. However, the individual must be able to provide documentation for these expenses.
