What is the difference between temporary and permanent spousal support?

Temporary spousal support is a payment made by one spouse to the other to help support the receiving spouse during the process of the divorce. It is meant to ensure that the receiving spouse has enough financial support while the couple is facing the legal proceedings of a divorce. Temporary support usually lasts until the divorce is finalized, with the possibility of adjustments if necessary. Permanent spousal support is a payment made by one spouse to the other after the divorce has been finalized. It is designed to help the receiving spouse maintain their standard of living that they had prior to the divorce. This form of support is much more long-term and is not expected to end until the death of the paying spouse, or until the receiving spouse remarries. In the state of California, a judge can take both temporary and permanent spousal support into consideration when making decisions regarding spousal support payments. The judge will review the income of both spouses as well as the cost of living for the spouse who the payments are being made to before making a decision. Additionally, the judge may also consider the length of the marriage and the degree to which one spouse may be more financially dependent on the other if necessary.
