Are there any legal requirements for lifeguard training and certification?
In Washington State, there are legal requirements for lifeguard training and certification. Per the Department of Health, all public swimming pools must employ lifeguards with proper certifications. All lifeguards must be certified in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and swimming pool emergency preparedness, as well as trained in emergency procedures. Certification must be provided by an approved provider and must be renewed every 24 months. Additionally, the lifeguard must complete an initial training program designed to educate the lifeguard on safety, rescue, and emergency response techniques. This training must be completed within the first 30 days of employment and must be verified through a signed training affidavit. Not following these requirements could lead to financial liability on the part of the property owner should an accident or injury occur at the pool. It is therefore important to ensure that lifeguards are properly certified and trained before making use of their services. This is especially important for public pools, as the safety of patrons is of the utmost importance.
