Are medical expenses tax deductible?
In Maryland, medical expenses can be tax deductible depending on a variety of factors. Generally, medical expenses can be deducted if you itemize your deductions on your federal tax return. When itemizing deductions, you can deduct expenses for the medical care of yourself, your spouse, or dependents. These expenses must be in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income in order to be deductible. Examples of deductible medical expenses include doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription medications, eye exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses. Other medical expenses that may be deductible include dental work, health insurance premiums, medical supplies, lab fees, and long-term care insurance. Additionally, you may be able to deduct transportation costs related to medical care, such as the cost of taking a taxi to and from the doctor’s office. It is important to note that the medical expenses deduction is only available if you itemize deductions on your federal income tax return. Therefore, it is important to keep track of your medical expenses throughout the year to ensure that you are able to take advantage of these deductions. Additionally, you should be aware that there are other factors that may impact the amount of deductions you can take, such as your filing status and the amount of taxes you owe.
