Are there any laws concerning the regulation of the internet of things?
In Vermont, laws regarding the regulation of the internet of things (IoT) are in their infancy. In 2013, Vermont passed the Digital Economy Legislation, which requires that all companies using the IoT must have a working knowledge of the technology’s security and data privacy risks and must put measures in place to protect that data. The law also requires companies to inform customers how their data is being used and requires that the customers have a way to opt out of the data collection. Other regulations concerning the IoT are being developed at the federal level. In 2016, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a report calling for stricter security and data privacy standards for IoT-connected devices. The FTC also recommends that companies should allow users to easily delete personal data or to easily turn off devices that contain that data. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has also issued guidelines for connected device manufacturers on topics such as security and privacy. The guidelines suggest that companies should secure data in transit and at rest, build privacy protections into their devices, and a provide device owners with information about their data practices. Because the internet of things is an ever-evolving technology, it is hard to stay on top of changes in the law. As such, it is important for companies to monitor any changes to the laws governing the IoT so that they can remain compliant.
