What is an inheritance tax?
An inheritance tax is a type of tax that is imposed on a person’s inheritors when they receive an inheritance from a deceased person. The tax is calculated based on the value of the inheritance being passed down. In Arizona, the inheritance tax is known as an Estate Tax and applies to estates of deceased persons whose gross estate, plus adjusted taxable gifts, is greater than $5.6 million. The Estate Tax imposed in Arizona is a progressive tax, meaning that the rate of taxation increases with the value of the estate. Generally, the tax rate ranges from 0.0% to 16.0%, depending on the value of the estate. This tax is in addition to any other taxes owed by the estate, such as the Arizona Income Tax or Gift Tax. In addition to the Estate Tax, Arizona also imposes a Successor’s Tax. This tax applies to certain transfers of assets from a deceased person’s estate to his or her successors. Generally, this tax is imposed upon the transfer of assets that exceed certain thresholds. It is important to note that this tax does not apply to all transfers; in general, it only applies to certain types of assets. In Arizona, all taxes owed must be paid before a person’s estate can be settled and assets distributed to the inheritors. This means that it is important to seek legal advice regarding inheritance taxes before a person passes away. A qualified attorney can help an estate plan to minimize the amount of taxes owed and ensure that the estate is settled in an efficient manner.
