How do I renew my trademark registration?

Renewing a trademark registration in Washington is done through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). To renew the registration, an application form, called the “Declaration of Renewal,” must be filed. This document must include the trademark name and registration number, a name and address of the owner/registrant, a signature, and a statement that the registration has not been assigned or canceled. The owner/registrant must also provide a drawing of the mark, and a specimen of the mark as used in commerce. After the Declaration of Renewal is received and processed, the USPTO will issue a Certificate of Renewal. This document certifies the ownership of the mark and extends the duration of the registration for another 10 years. The Certificate of Renewal should be kept with the original registration as proof of ownership. The renewal process must be completed before the registration lapses. If the registration is allowed to lapse, the mark may become vulnerable to infringement and the owner/registrant may risk losing exclusive rights to the mark. If the registration is not renewed within certain time limits, the trademark may be deemed abandoned and the owner/registrant may lose all rights to the mark, including the right to renew.
