What is a “fix-it ticket”?

A “fix-it ticket” is a type of traffic ticket issued in the state of Arizona when a minor vehicle violation has been committed. Examples of minor violations that might result in a fix-it ticket include having a broken taillight, an expired registration or license plate sticker, or an expired emission control sticker. Rather than paying a fine, the driver has the option of fixing the violation and presenting proof to the court in order to dismiss the ticket. In Arizona, most types of fix-it tickets can be dismissed by providing evidence of the violation’s correction within 15 days. To dismiss a fix-it ticket, the driver must present proof in the form of a receipt or other documentation that clearly states the violation has been correctly corrected. This proof must then be submitted to the court along with the ticket or before the court date. If the driver fails to present proof of the violation’s correction or misses the court date, a conviction may be entered against the driver. If the driver fails to correct the violation, the court will enter a conviction against the driver and a fine may be imposed. The amount of the fine depends on the violation and the driver’s driving record. In some cases, additional penalties may be imposed, such as points on the driver’s license or, in the case of an expired registration sticker, a possible suspension or revocation of the driver’s license.
