What is a “fix-it ticket”?

A “fix-it ticket” is the informal name for a type of ticket issued by a law enforcement officer in South Carolina for a non-moving traffic violation. These violations include expired registration, broken taillights, and other minor offenses which can be fixed in order to be in compliance with the law. When a law enforcement officer in South Carolina sees a motor vehicle that is non-compliant with the law, the officer may issue a “fix-it ticket”. This type of ticket is not a criminal offense and does not require a court appearance. However, the ticket holder is required to fix the problem within a certain time limit, usually 30 days. The ticket may also require a small fine or fee to be paid as well. Once the issue has been fixed, the ticket holder must visit the court in the county and the municipality in which the violation occurred in order to clear their violation. The ticket holder must bring proof of the fix in the form of a document, such as a repair invoice or receipt, in order to have the ticket cleared. Fix-it tickets can be easily avoided by ensuring that all vehicle issues are addressed promptly. Drivers should also be sure to keep up with all vehicle registrations and renewals in order to avoid any fines associated with a fix-it ticket.
