How many points will I get on my license for a traffic ticket?

The number of points associated with a traffic ticket can vary depending on the severity of the offense. In West Virginia, the Department of Motor Vehicles assigns points for certain violations as determined by state law. The majority of traffic tickets which are classified as minor offenses are assigned three points. Severity of the offense and past driving record can increase the points assigned. Some examples include speeding which is 3 points, reckless driving which is 6 points, driving without a license is 8 points, and DUI which is 10 points. If you are convicted of a traffic violation, those points will be added to your driving record which is then maintained by the DMV. Depending on the number of points on your driving record, your license may be suspended or revoked. If your license is suspended or revoked, you will not be allowed to operate a vehicle. Once the points associated with a ticket have been added to your driving record, they will remain on your record for two years. If you do not commit another traffic violation during this period, your points will then be removed from your record. It is important to remember that accumulating points on your license can lead to serious repercussions, so it is important to drive safely and obey all traffic laws.
