What are the possible penalties for a traffic ticket?

In North Carolina, the penalties for a traffic ticket vary depending on the severity of the offense. Generally speaking, minor violations such as speeding, running a stop sign, or failing to use a turn signal may result in a fine of up to $200. If the offense is more serious, such as reckless driving or a DUI, then the fine may be increased to as much as $1,000, and the violator may also be sent to jail for up to 6 months. In addition to a fine, traffic ticket violators may also face points on their driver’s license. For minor offenses, the points range between 1-4, while more serious violations can result in anywhere from three to eight. Drivers who accumulate 12 or more points on their license in a three-year period may face a license suspension. For certain violations, the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles may also require violators to complete a driver improvement course. This course is designed to teach drivers about basic traffic safety and can help drivers avoid future violations. Finally, if the court finds that a driver has violated the law with negligence or disregard, they may also be required to have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle for a period of time. This device requires the driver to blow into a breathalyzer before the car will start, ensuring that the driver is not under the influence while operating a vehicle.
