How long do I have to pay a traffic ticket after it is issued?
In Massachusetts, you have twenty days after being issued a traffic ticket to either pay the fine or request a hearing. If you choose to pay the ticket within the prescribed time, you can usually do so online or by mail. If you choose to dispute the ticket, you must request a hearing within the twenty-day period. Once the request is made, your case will be heard in court. If you fail to pay the ticket or request a hearing within twenty days, the fine will automatically double. After thirty days, you may be subject to a warrant for your arrest, have your license suspended, and/or have your vehicle registration revoked. If you are unable to pay the ticket within the allotted time, you may be able to work out a payment plan with the court. You should contact the court clerk for more information. If your case goes to court, the presiding judge may reduce the fine, suspend the sentence, or allow time to make payments. However, if the violation is more serious, you may face more serious penalties. In summary, you must pay the ticket or request a hearing within twenty days of being issued the ticket in Massachusetts. If you fail to do so, you may face additional fines, have your license suspended, or even face arrest. If you are unable to make payments, you may be able to work out an arrangement with the court.
