How long do I have to pay a traffic ticket after it is issued?
In Washington, the amount of time you have to pay a traffic ticket depends on the type of violation. Most traffic tickets must be paid within 15 days of the date the ticket was issued. If you are unable to pay the fine within 15 days, you must submit a request to extend the due date to the court that issued the ticket. If the ticket was issued for an unsafe driving offense, such as reckless driving or speeding, you may be required to appear in court. If that is the case, you may be given a longer period to pay the ticket. In some cases, the court may allow you to pay your ticket in installments. However, failure to comply with the payment schedule could lead to a suspension of your driver’s license. If you fail to pay your ticket within the time allotted, or fail to appear in court if required, your license may be suspended and/or a warrant for your arrest may be issued. If the ticket is not paid by the due date, the court may also charge an additional fee. If you have received a ticket and are unsure of the payment due date, you should contact the court that issued the ticket for more information.
