What is the Robinson–Patman Act?

The Robinson-Patman Act is a federal law passed in 1936 that prohibits companies from engaging in unfair competitive practices, such as price discrimination. The Act was created with the intention of protecting consumers from unfair competition and promoting competition and open markets within the United States. It was designed to ensure that competition between different producers of similar products was fair and open. Specifically, the act prohibits companies from selling their products at different prices to different buyers or offering discounts or rebates to certain buyers, unless the same discounts or rebates are provided to all buyers. In South Carolina, the Robinson-Patman Act applies to all businesses selling goods or services within the state. The Act has the power to penalize businesses found in violation of the act with civil or criminal sanctions. The main purpose of the Robinson-Patman Act is to ensure that companies are not engaging in unfair business practices that could be detrimental to consumers. The Act also seeks to protect small businesses from larger companies that may have a competitive advantage. By preventing companies from engaging in discriminatory pricing, the Robinson-Patman Act helps to create a fair and open marketplace in South Carolina.
