What is the scope of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act?
The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) is a U.S. federal law designed to protect computer networks from illegal access. The scope of the CFAA is specifically designed to target computer fraud and abuse which is defined as any unauthorized access of a computer or computer network to access information, steal data, or cause damage. The CFAA applies to individuals, companies, and governments; it is enforced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other federal law enforcement agencies in cases that involve interstate commerce or communications. Additionally, many states have enacted their own laws which provide further protection from cybercrime and fraud. These laws are intended to help keep businesses and consumers safe from malicious online activity.
