What is constitutional law?
Constitutional law is a body of law that deals with the interpretation and implementation of the Constitution of the United States in the state of Washington. Constitutional law establishes and defines the powers of the federal government, the relationships between the federal government and the states, and the rights of individuals in the state. It is based on the U.S. Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land. Constitutional law has a major role in determining the limits of government power by establishing the parameters of what the government can and cannot do. It also provides guidance on how the government should act within those parameters. The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest authority on constitutional law, and it rules on cases arising from lower court decisions by interpreting the Constitution and deciding whether state or federal laws are constitutional. In addition to the federal Constitution, Washington has its own state constitution, which has the same legal standing and provides citizens in the state with additional rights and protections beyond what is provided in the federal document. State constitutional law applies to issues related to state government and the rights of state residents. Constitutional law is crucial to the functioning of government and the protection of individual liberties. It is the basis for many of the legal rules and regulations that govern our nation, and it ensures that the government is held accountable for abiding by the principles outlined in the U.S. Constitution.
