What is the significance of the Fifteenth Amendment?
The Fifteenth Amendment is an important part of New Hampshire’s constitutional law. The Amendment, ratified in 1870, states that the right to vote is not to be denied on the basis of “race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” This meant that African Americans, after being freed from slavery, could finally vote in New Hampshire. Prior to the 15th Amendment, African Americans had been denied the right to vote for almost a century. The Fifteenth Amendment was essential in establishing the fundamental right of African Americans to vote in the United States. It was a critical step towards the eventual realization of equal rights for all citizens, regardless of race.
