What are the responsibilities of a utility company in regards to construction and maintenance?
In South Carolina, utility companies are responsible for the construction and maintenance of electrical, water, and sewer systems. This responsibility is regulated by the Public Service Commission which sets the standards for utilities to provide safe and reliable service and facilities. Utility companies must continually maintain their systems in order to meet these standards. This includes replacing worn out pipes and other components as well as regularly checking for any problems that may arise. Utility companies also need to update their systems to accommodate customers’ needs. For instance, replacing outdated electrical wiring and upgrading utility poles to accommodate new customers. Construction of new facilities is also the responsibility of the utility company. When new infrastructure is needed, the utility company will need to obtain the necessary permits from the state and local government in order to begin construction. They also need to plan and engineer the construction in order to ensure that the structures are safely built and complies with all safety regulations. It is the responsibility of the utility company to keep all structures and systems working properly. This includes scheduling outages for maintenance or repair work, or responding to emergency situations. Additionally, they must keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs, and communicate any potential problems to their customers.
